A United Airlines plane hit a light pole while landing at Newark Airport, in New Jersey (US), last Sunday (3).

Flight UA169, coming from Venice, Italy, was carrying 221 passengers and ten crew members and landed at around 2 p.m. local time. During the approach, however, the aircraft ended up striking a light pole.

After the collision, a piece of the pole fell onto a truck traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged, according to NBC News.

Despite the incident, the plane landed safely and taxied to the gate, with no injuries reported among those on board. United said its maintenance team was assessing the damage to the aircraft.

“We will conduct a thorough flight safety investigation into the incident and our crew has been removed from service as part of the process,” the company said in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also investigating the case. A preliminary report is expected to be released within the next 30 days.
