Equipped with two GE Aerospace CT7 engines, each with 2,500 hp (1,860 kW), the AW249 also uses the dynamic components of the AW149 model.

Designed to replace the current fleet of AW129D Mangusta attack helicopters of the Italian army, the AW249 is expected to enter service from 2025.
