A recent video released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense captures the striking moment when a Russian howitzer Msta-S is destroyed by an attack from HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems) supplied by the West to Ukraine.

The Msta-S, in an attempt to blend into the Ukrainian landscape, was ultimately located and struck by Ukrainian forces.

The footage, shared by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and attributed to the country’s special forces, was filmed on the left bank, or the eastern bank, of the Dnieper River, which flows through the Kherson region in southern Ukraine.

“There is no escape from Ukrainian HIMARS,” said Kyiv.

The United States provided 39 HIMARS, or High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, to Ukraine as part of their military aid packages. The authorities in Kyiv have praised the impact of HIMARS since their arrival in the war-torn country in June 2022.

The brief clip appears to show the Msta-S moving through a wooded area before stopping under the cover of trees and then exploding into flames. The video seems to have been filmed by a Ukrainian drone. Kyiv frequently uses drones for reconnaissance and targeting alongside equipment such as HIMARS.

The Msta-S is officially known as 2S19 “Msta-S” and was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. Its development was aimed at replacing older Soviet self-propelled artillery systems.

The Msta-S is equipped with a 152mm cannon and has the capability to fire a wide range of ammunition, including conventional and guided projectiles. It features an automatic loading system that allows for a relatively high rate of fire.
