The new version of the Russian jet enhances its combat capabilities and features the BRLS-130R radar, SOLT-130K optical-laser system, and “President-S130” electronic defense suite.

Russian manufacturer Yakovlev has announced the completion of the second prototype of the Yak-130M training and light combat aircraft under the experimental development program.

The model received the Russian Air Force’s traditional pixelated camouflage and will undergo ground and flight tests in the coming months. Meanwhile, assembly of a third unit is already underway.

The first prototype was recently completed at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, marking the start of certification and validation tests for the new technologies incorporated into the modernized version of the jet.

According to Dmitry Popov, Deputy Chief Designer of the Yak-130 program, the new model was developed based on an analysis of recent operational experiences of Russian aviation in local and regional conflicts.

“The creation of light combat aircraft based on training platforms reflects global trends in modern military aviation,” Popov stated.

The Yak-130M is derived from the successful Yak-130, used to train pilots of fourth- and fifth-generation fighters. The main goal of the modernization is to expand the combat capabilities of the aircraft, which will now be able to operate with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles.

Among its innovations, the model features the BRLS-130R radar, SOLT-130K optical-laser and thermal imaging system, “President-S130” electronic defense complex, and KSS-130 communication system.

These upgrades will allow the Yak-130M to conduct training and combat missions around the clock, even under adverse weather conditions.
