One of the recordings, published on the Douyin platform, shows a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft conducting a test flight near the city of Xi’an, the traditional center of China’s military aviation programs and home to major industrial complexes in the aerospace sector.

In several early posts, the aircraft appears identified as the Y-30. However, analysts and open-source observers indicate that this designation is incorrect. The Y-30 is associated with a concept presented at the Zhuhai Airshow in 2014 and has no direct connection to the aircraft currently undergoing tests. Experts note that Y-30 was a preliminary designation abandoned in the final stages of development, with Y-15 being the correct identification of the new project.
According to preliminary assessments, the Y-15 was designed to fill an intermediate niche within the transport fleet of the People’s Liberation Army of China. The aircraft is positioned between the smaller Y-9 and the heavy strategic transport Y-20, expanding China’s capabilities in regional and tactical transport missions.

The primary role of the new platform will be to replace older aircraft while offering greater operational flexibility. The adoption of a four-engine turboprop configuration indicates a focus on fuel efficiency, solid performance on short- and medium-range routes, and the ability to operate from less-prepared airfields, a capability considered strategic for operations in remote areas.
The Y-15 is expected to progressively replace aircraft from the Y-8 and Y-9 families, both derived from the Soviet Antonov An-12 design. For decades, these models formed the backbone of China’s medium military transport capability but have increasingly faced limitations due to structural aging and the obsolescence of onboard systems.

Although Chinese authorities have not yet released official technical details, the appearance of the Y-15 during flight testing indicates that the program has entered an advanced stage of development, reinforcing China’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military transport aviation.
