A man was caught fleeing from a Waymo autonomous taxi that ended up stuck on light rail tracks in Phoenix, Arizona (USA), last week.
According to KPHO, the driverless taxi became stuck on the light rail tracks. A witness filmed the moment the passenger fled the vehicle as a streetcar approached.
According to Valley Metro, which operates regional transit in the Phoenix area, the incident occurred last Wednesday (7) at around 9 a.m. No one was injured, and traffic was cleared about 15 minutes later.
Waymo began operating its autonomous taxis in Phoenix before expanding to Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, Austin in Texas, and Atlanta in Georgia.
Its vehicles use an autonomous driving system supported by 29 cameras and, according to the company, routes and systems are updated weekly. However, some factors can confuse the operating systems.
“I think Waymo has a challenge, because no matter what they do with their system, there will always be unexpected circumstances that they will have to learn from,” explained Andrew Maynard, a professor of emerging and transformative technology at ASU, to KPHO.
Even so, he said he believes in the safety of autonomous cars. “These cars, in many circumstances, are safer than human drivers because they don’t have distractions like a human driver does.”
