According to NATO Air Command, in yesterday’s operation, two Mirage 2000-5 aircraft conducted a series of critical interceptions. They initially encountered two Russian SU-30 fighters near the airspace of Latvia, followed by the interception of an IL-20 reconnaissance plane and subsequently a Russian transport aircraft off the coast of Lithuania.

These actions are part of NATO’s ongoing effort to protect the integrity of its members’ airspace, especially the Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – which share direct borders with Russia and are therefore in a sensitive geographic position.

The interception of Russian military aircraft by Mirage fighters is not an isolated event but rather part of a security protocol to ensure that foreign aircraft do not inadvertently or deliberately enter sovereign airspace without prior coordination. NATO maintains an active military presence in the region, including air patrols, in response to what it perceives as aggressive Russian military activities on the alliance’s eastern borders.
