A man who had arranged to see a car listed on Facebook Marketplace showed how he narrowly avoided a scam after taking some very valuable precautions.
Isaac posted a video on TikTok explaining that he had set up a meeting with a man to see the Nissan Altima listed on Facebook Marketplace for a price that seemed too good to be true.
Filming with his glasses equipped with a hidden camera, the content creator showed how he thoroughly inspected the car and even ran a scanner to make sure everything was okay.
“Looks good,” Isaac says in the recording before asking the owner, “Does [the car] have any issues?” The owner then shrugged and replied, “No.”
However, when looking under the hood, Isaac noticed a concerning detail, which he highlighted in the caption: “The engine is completely full of mouse droppings, which means it has been sitting idle for a while.”
Isaac then decided to take the Altima for a test drive. During the drive, he noticed the steering wheel was shaking a lot. He mentioned this to the seller during the trip. Upon returning to the parking lot, Isaac says, “I like it.”
He then pulled out his phone to check the vehicle’s Carfax report to see if there was anything wrong that the seller hadn’t mentioned. That’s when he discovered that, although the report indicated the car had over 190,000 km, the odometer showed only 140,000 km.
It was at that moment Isaac realized the seller had tampered with the odometer to reduce the mileage displayed on the dashboard. According to Isaac, the Carfax report also indicated the vehicle had a salvage/rebuilt title.
When asked about the title, the seller responded that he “didn’t know.” Even if the vehicle appears to be in good condition, buying a salvage car is always risky, especially since it’s impossible to know if the previous owner cut corners on parts or if the repairs were done properly.
In the end, Isaac’s video serves as a strong warning to drivers interested in buying used cars. Conducting a thorough inspection and checking the vehicle’s history report is always the best way to avoid scams.
