A man issued a warning to drivers who habitually leave water bottles inside their cars after a major disaster happened in his Jeep.
Guero Navarrete, from Texas, posted a video on his TikTok profile explaining that he was cleaning his Jeep after a small fire appeared to have taken over the interior of his car.
While Guero did not share many details—such as whether the bottle was plastic or glass, how long it was left in the sun, or exactly how hot it was outside—the results were shocking.
“That’s what happens when you leave a water bottle on the front seat and the sun hits it at just the right spot, like a magnifying glass,” Navarrete wrote in the overlay text on the clip, which has already accumulated over 500,000 views.
It may sound crazy, but it is actually possible. When sunlight reflects off a water bottle, the material acts like a magnifying glass focusing solar rays on a specific area, which can start a small fire that spreads quickly.
The heat can also cause the liquid inside to expand, generating pressure, and if the pressure gets too high, the bottle can burst.
Additionally, when plastic bottles heat up, they can begin to break down and release substances into the water, posing a risk of chemical contamination.
Moral of the story? Don’t leave water bottles inside your car, unless they are thermos bottles that are better able to withstand external temperature variations and are generally more durable.
“Thanks for the heads up, I’m cleaning my car today,” said one TikTok user in the video’s comment section. “To-do list: Clean water bottle number 1 from the car,” joked another. “My windows are too tinted for that to happen,” warned a third user.
