Ending an era: historic aircraft leaves service after more than half a century of operations

The ceremony took place last week at the organization’s operational center in Greensboro, celebrating the legacy of DC-8 serial number N782SP. The aircraft was originally built as a DC-8-62CF in March 1969 for Finnair. Decades later, already converted into a freighter (DC-8-72CF) and equipped with modern CFM56-2 engines replacing the older JT3D powerplants, it began flying for Air Transport International.

In 2015, the veteran jet joined the Samaritan’s Purse fleet, becoming a centerpiece of global relief operations. Throughout its humanitarian service, it took part in more than 200 missions, transporting over 4,000 tons of supplies, including field hospitals, medicine and emergency equipment sent to regions devastated by natural disasters or humanitarian crises.
The farewell was marked by strong emotion: according to one of the pilots, the DC-8 was “a tool of God that carried hope.” The phrase summarizes the crucial role the aircraft played throughout its operational life, becoming a symbol of resilience and service to those in need.

A giant from the jet age
Launched in the 1960s, the Douglas DC-8 became one of the great milestones of commercial aviation, competing directly with the Boeing 707 during the global transition to jet-powered air travel. Its reputation for high reliability and durability allowed several units to remain active for more than half a century in passenger service and, later, predominantly as freighters.
Today, only two DC-8s remain flying worldwide:
• OB-2231P, operated by Peru’s SkyBus Cargo Charters
• 9S-AJO, of Trans Air Cargo Service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Both aircraft are already more than 55 years old, standing as living witnesses to an era that is rapidly approaching its definitive end.
