This initiative aims to evaluate the potential use of these technologies within the ground forces, paving the way for future applications in defense and domestic security.
One of the most notable acquisitions in this effort is the VISION 60, a medium-sized unmanned ground drone, popularly known as the “robotic dog“. Developed by Ghost Robotics, the VISION 60 is a semi-autonomous quadruped robot designed to operate in adverse environments and provide support across a diverse range of missions.

With a payload capacity of up to 31 pounds and a maximum speed of 6.71 miles per hour, the VISION 60 offers an impressive combination of power and agility. Its operational autonomy of up to 10 kilometers and a runtime of three hours allow for its deployment in prolonged missions, covering vast areas efficiently.

The robust and multifunctional design of the VISION 60 enables it to navigate through a variety of terrains, from rugged landscapes and hills to sand and stairs, demonstrating exceptional mobility in complex environments. Whether walking, running, crawling, or even swimming, this robotic dog is capable of overcoming obstacles and significantly contributing to the military forces’ patrol and reconnaissance capabilities.

The adoption of robotic dogs in military operations is not unique to Japan. The United States Air Force has been using these machines since March 2022 for security and patrol missions at their facilities, highlighting a global trend in integrating autonomous robots into defense strategies.
