Firefighters were alerted to the fire just before 9:45 PM on Saturday. A video of the incident shows flames and smoke coming from the north parking lot of the plant. The fire did not spread beyond the vehicles, sparing the plant. No one was injured.
Matt Swaney, the Normal Fire Department spokesperson, told WEEK-TV that firefighters extinguished the blaze by midnight on Sunday but remained on site as battery fires can be difficult to put out and there is a risk of the fire reigniting. The department has already begun its investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
In the comments, netizens reacted to the sudden fire. “This is one of the reasons why our [car] insurance premiums are skyrocketing,” commented a YouTube user. “Wow, this is so good for the environment,” quipped another.
“What a waste of resources. Both for helping the environment and they claim these vehicles were made for that,” lamented a third netizen. “Rivian is almost bankrupt. These are unsold cars and Rivian needs a payout. […] the insurance compensates them,” stated another.
