The aircraft is making its public debut at one of China’s largest aviation events, offering a more detailed look at China’s naval military capabilities.
The J-15T stands out for being designed for catapult-assisted takeoff (CATOBAR), an advanced technology that differentiates it from the previous J-15A version, which used Russian AL-31F engines and short takeoff (STOBAR). Equipped with Chinese-made WS-10 engines, the J-15T demonstrates China’s growing independence in developing aerospace technologies.
This updated fighter was developed to operate from China’s latest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, which is equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), enabling quick and efficient takeoffs. Unlike the original J-15, which was derived from the Soviet-era Su-33 Flanker, the J-15T incorporates Chinese-made avionics and weapons, significantly modernizing the base design dating back to the 1980s.
The J-15T accompanies the debut of another innovative PLA fighter, the J-35A, a medium-sized stealth fighter for the PLA Air Force, which was officially unveiled yesterday. Both aircraft represent substantial advancements in China’s military technology.
The 15th edition of Airshow China in Zhuhai will take place from November 12 to 17, featuring major demonstrations expected to highlight the modernization and technological prowess of Chinese aviation.
