The incident occurred during the aircraft’s landing at the Wadi Saydna base, close to the capital, Khartoum. The RSF released a video that supposedly documents the destruction of the C-130 aircraft, showcasing the use of advanced combat technologies in their operations.
This act of aggression is part of a prolonged dispute between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which has intensified since mid-April 2023. The origin of the conflict dates back to disagreements over the transition to a civilian government following a coup in 2021, co-organized by both factions in the aftermath of the ousting of former leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
The persistence of these hostilities has posed significant challenges to the Sudanese army, reflected in a worsening humanitarian crisis. The violence has exacerbated ethnic tensions in Darfur and led to massive displacements and widespread suffering among the civilian population.
Despite the RSF’s initial advances, the Sudanese army has regained key territories, such as Omdurman, indicating a possible shift in the power dynamics. However, the escalation in the use of military technology, as evidenced by the recent drone attack, poses additional challenges for both the security forces and the humanitarian organizations operating in the region.
