This result exceeded the initial estimate of 420 km/h by 33 km/h, surpassing the record of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, which had reached 408 km/h in 2013. Bugatti’s test driver Andy Wallace was behind the wheel of the Mistral for this record-breaking run.
The Mistral also outperformed the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, which reached 427 km/h in 2016, and is now the new speed record holder for convertible cars.
Only 99 units of the Mistral will be produced, and the record-breaking version is a one-of-a-kind piece with Jet Orange details that pay homage to the record-breaking Veyron cars, such as the 16.4 Super Sport. The owner of the Mistral also owns the brand’s other three record-breaking cars.
The speed run was conducted in Papenburg because Bugatti did not have access to the Ehra-Lessien track, owned by the Volkswagen Group, which was the site of the Veyron and Chiron records.
Meanwhile, Hennessey claims that the Venom F5 Roadster can reach 482 km/h, but the Mistral remains the current speed leader among open-top cars.
