Robbie Brewer, veteran stock car driver, died after suffering a medical emergency and crashing into a wall while racing on a track in North Carolina, USA, last weekend.
Brewer, 53, crashed head-on into a wall on the 400-meter track at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem during a 20-lap race last Saturday (9) and stopped near the finish line.
Workers removed the roof of the car to extract the driver before an ambulance took him to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital, where he was pronounced dead, reported the Winston-Salem Journal.
“We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer, who was transported to a local medical center after a medical incident on the track,” track officials said in a statement on Sunday (10).
“Robbie was a talented and passionate driver, and a highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie’s family and friends at this time.”
Brewer won the Sportsman division 11 times at Bowman Gray and competed in 311 races at the historic stadium across all divisions, according to the site FloRacing.
On her Facebook profile, Courtney Marquette, Brewer’s daughter, paid tribute to her father, whom she called her “mentor and best friend.” “He left this world doing what he loved, but it was much, much too soon,” she lamented.
