Venezuela has strengthened its air defense following demonstration flights by US bombers near its territory.
The country installed new air defense systems in the La Guaira region, north of Caracas, including self-propelled Buk-M2E launchers acquired from Russia, along with support from a ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft gun.
US exercises involved B-1 Lancer strategic bombers performing maneuvers near Venezuelan airspace. Command and control aircraft, including the Bombardier E-11A and the WC-130J used for weather reconnaissance, were also identified operating in the same coastal area.
Although the official purpose of the US operations was not detailed, these actions are perceived to increase military and political pressure on Caracas. In response to the tense situation, President Nicolás Maduro stated that the country maintains about 5,000 Russian Igla-S portable systems in strategic defense positions.
