The United States Navy has officially commissioned the USS Idaho (SSN 799), the 26th Virginia-class attack submarine.

The ceremony took place at Naval Submarine Base New London in Connecticut, marking another step forward in the modernization of the country’s submarine fleet.

The event was attended by high-ranking civilian and military authorities. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao formalized the commissioning, while Teresa Stackley, the ship’s sponsor, gave the traditional order symbolizing the start of the vessel’s operations. Lawmakers and defense leaders were also present, reinforcing the strategic importance of the new submarine.

Built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in partnership with HII Newport News Shipbuilding, the USS Idaho follows the Block IV standard, a more advanced version of the Virginia class. The submarine also carries a historical legacy, being the fifth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name Idaho, referencing ships that served in major conflicts of the last century.

With approximately 7,800 tons and over 100 meters in length, the submarine is equipped with a long-life nuclear reactor, eliminating the need for refueling throughout its service life. Designed for multi-mission roles, the platform combines stealth technology, advanced surveillance systems, and special operations capabilities, expanding the United States’ strategic presence across various maritime scenarios.
