The United States Marine Corps evaluated prototypes of FPV drones in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit and industry companies during the DIU GI Challenge.
The event tested small unmanned aerial systems in different operational scenarios, including hands-on training and field demonstrations.
Marines assessed the drones based on ease of use, deployment speed, weather resistance, payload capacity, and performance across various types of terrain. According to officers, the tests allow military experience combined with industry innovations to help define the next generation of unmanned systems and select the best platforms for future use.
The competition is part of a three-step process that includes proposal review, practical evaluation, and a final round that will determine which drones will be acquired.
Based on the results, the winning platforms are expected to be added to the Department of Defense’s official UAV list by March 2026. This year, the Marine Corps also formed its first unit dedicated to attack drones.
