The United States Army has contracted Saab Inc., based in East Syracuse, New York, to supply its Giraffe 1X radars under a $46 million contract, scheduled for completion in September 2025.
The equipment is part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Partner Capacity Enhancement program, and the contract is managed by the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
The Giraffe 1X radar is a compact 3D air surveillance system designed to support land-based air defense missions, drone detection, and artillery, rocket, and mortar warning. The equipment can operate as the primary sensor in short-range air defense systems or as a complement to larger platforms, and it can serve as a dedicated counter-drone solution, tracking low, slow, and small targets increasingly common on modern battlefields.
Weighing under 150 kilograms and with low power consumption, the Giraffe 1X is highly portable and can be deployed on mobile platforms or fixed bases. It provides continuous 360-degree coverage of airspace, allowing rapid responses to emerging threats and new enemy tactics. Its modular design makes the radar versatile for protecting forward bases, critical infrastructure, and maneuvering forces.
