The United States has approved a military sale of approximately US$1 billion to the United Kingdom to support the development of the next generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines under the AUKUS partnership, formed by the US, the UK and Australia.
The package includes submarine combat systems, weapon launchers, advanced electronic components and technical support aimed at the design of future military vessels.
The agreement also provides for the supply of software, source codes, simulation equipment, technical documentation, personnel training and support for tests and evaluations. Another key point is the joint work of British and American professionals at facilities in both countries, strengthening integration between the submarine programmes linked to the so-called Pillar 1 of AUKUS.
According to the official notification, the programme was initially valued at US$50 million and focused on engineering support and the integration of American equipment into submarines being developed for the navies of the United Kingdom and Australia. With the expansion of the project’s scope, the estimated value rose to US$1 billion, although this does not necessarily represent the total already spent so far.
The US Department of State said the sale strengthens the security of a NATO ally and contributes to maritime stability in north-western Europe. The US government also highlighted that the agreement will help the United Kingdom expand its deterrence capability and protect maritime interests, without significantly altering the military balance in the region.
