The United States will deploy a troop detachment equipped with M1A2 Abrams tanks to Romania as part of NATO’s rotational scheme on the alliance’s southeastern flank.

According to Romania’s Chief of the General Staff, Gheorghiță Vlad, the move does not represent an increase in troop numbers, but rather a modernization of the assets employed in the country.

According to the general, Washington agreed to enhance the quality and combat capability of the forces stationed on Romanian territory, particularly through the use of Abrams armored vehicles. The matter was discussed directly with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe during an official visit to Romania, reinforcing alignment with regional defense plans.

NATO also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining forces dedicated to the protection of Romania in line with the alliance’s strategic planning. Despite the United States having announced the withdrawal of a battalion from the rotational brigade in October, around 1,000 American troops remain in the country, integrated into the allied defensive posture.

Combined with the European troops already present, the total contingent in Romania is expected to remain at around 3,500 soldiers. Amid the regional context, Gheorghiță Vlad also stated that Romania, a close ally of Moldova, is ready to provide support should the neighboring country suffer a Russian attack.
