The United Kingdom has shown openness to a future partnership with Canada in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), an international initiative aimed at developing a sixth-generation fighter jet by 2035.

Although Canada is not currently part of the project, the UK’s Defence Minister stated that collaboration could be possible in the future. Analysts suggest that Canada could be a natural partner, given its strong security ties with the UK and its recent acquisition of the F-35, aligning it with GCAP members.

Launched in 2022 by the United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy, the program aims to create a stealth multifunctional aircraft to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon and Mitsubishi F-2 models. By unifying the Tempest and F-X projects, GCAP plans to incorporate artificial intelligence, integration between manned and unmanned aircraft, and advanced sensors. Development is being led by companies such as BAE Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Leonardo S.p.A., with a demonstrator expected by 2027. In addition to strengthening national security, the program aims to boost innovation in the aerospace sector of the participating countries.

While Sweden and Saudi Arabia have expressed interest in joining GCAP, they have faced obstacles in becoming full members, primarily due to export restrictions and security concerns. While Sweden withdrew from negotiations, Saudi Arabia continues discussions, receiving stronger support from Italy and the UK.

The project is coordinated by an industrial joint venture and represents a long-term strategic effort, with potential for export and expanded international cooperation.
