The United Kingdom is developing the Type 83 destroyer program as part of the Future Air Dominance System (FADS) to replace the current Type 45.

The initiative, still in the conceptual phase, promises to boost the shipbuilding sector and the country’s economy. According to the Secretary of State for Defence, Maria Eagle, the government is committed to strengthening the entire supply chain, from design to ship integration.

Although the location for the construction of the destroyers has not been defined, the program will ensure shipbuilding jobs at least until the middle of the 2040s, depending on the number of vessels produced. Eagle highlighted that the government will assess the involvement of the domestic industry and the social impact of the project to maximize both economic value and national security.

The Type 83 is expected to boost British shipyards and strengthen the UK’s Defence Industrial Strategy. The Ministry of Defence continues to evaluate the best opportunities to benefit local economies and strengthen the country’s industrial capacity.
