The United Kingdom and Norway are advancing military cooperation by evaluating the joint acquisition of up to 30 new vessels designed for coastal operations.

The initiative is part of a strategic effort to expand integrated operational capabilities in sensitive regions such as the North Atlantic and the High North, where maritime conditions require greater preparedness and coordination between allied forces.

The project, called Joint Commando Craft, envisions the development of a new class of vessels capable of transporting troops and equipment, as well as carrying out insertion and extraction missions in complex coastal environments. The vessels are expected to surpass current models in performance, with improvements in speed, range, maneuverability, and durability, in addition to incorporating advanced systems for sensors, target designation, and situational awareness.

With up to 24 meters in length and a displacement of around 60 tons, the vessels will be designed to operate independently for several days. On the British side, they will be used by the UK Commando Force, led by the Royal Marines, while Norway intends to deploy them within its specialized coastal forces. The goal is to expand operational reach and ensure efficiency across different scenarios, from open seas to shallow coastal waters.

As part of the initial stages, both countries have already launched market consultations through a Request for Information (RFI), seeking to identify available solutions, costs, and delivery timelines. The expectation is that the vessels will be built in Norway, strengthening the local industry. The program is part of a broader defense cooperation agreement between the two countries, which also includes maritime systems, undersea warfare, and unmanned technologies, reinforcing their strategic military partnership.
