The United Arab Emirates have just made a billion-dollar acquisition: six CH-47F Chinook military transport helicopters from the United States.
This deal was confirmed by the authorization from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which approved the sale valued at over $1.3 billion.
It is worth noting that this is not the initial deployment of a new type of equipment, which usually incurs high infrastructure and maintenance costs.
With that in mind, it is important to understand that much of the cost comes from the export nature of the contract, as well as the large package of additional equipment and services contracted.
For comparison, the U.S. Special Operations Command signed a contract with Boeing two years earlier to provide six additional MH-47G Chinook helicopters, valued at $271 million.
If finalized, the contract would meet the current demand of the United Arab Emirates for new military helicopters, which remained open after the cancellation of the H225 Caracal deal in May 2023.
