An armed unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from Ukraine destroyed a Russian armored vehicle during a nighttime attack attempt, the 5th Assault Brigade of Kyiv revealed.
In a statement, the unit shared that the attack attempt occurred on the night of last Wednesday (10), while Russian troops were preparing to advance on Ukrainian positions under the cover of darkness.
Thermal camera footage released by the 5th Assault Brigade of Kyiv shows the Ukrainian robotic combat system Droid engaging a Russian MT-LB with mounted infantry.
“At night, the enemy was preparing to breach the positions of the 5th Assault Brigade. Our teams activated the Droid ground combat platforms equipped with a heavy machine gun,” the brigade said in its official note.
“One of the operators detected an MT-LB with a landing group moving directly into the kill zone through the thermal imaging generator. 12.7 mm cartridge explosions pierced the side of the vehicle, striking the crew and assault infantry.”
According to the unit, the hit vehicle lost steering control and passed mere centimeters from the ground robot before stopping after taking additional attacks to the rear.
After the attack, a reconnaissance drone was sent to the site to assess the outcome, the brigade said. “Enemy infantry that suffered fatal injuries fell right next to the neutralized armored vehicle. The attack was thwarted,” the statement added.
The MT-LB is a Soviet-era tracked armored vehicle commonly used to transport troops and supplies. The neutralization of the Russian vehicle using the Droid highlights the evolving role of unmanned ground systems in Ukraine’s defensive operations.
