The Ukrainian Army intends to gradually replace its Soviet-origin helicopters with American UH-60 Black Hawk aircraft as part of a plan to modernize its military aviation.
The information was confirmed by the commander of Army Aviation, Brigadier General Pavlo Bardakov, who highlighted the growing difficulties in keeping aircraft that depend on Russian-made components in operation.
According to Bardakov, the priority is to keep the current fleet of Mi-8, Mi-24 and other Soviet helicopters in combat-ready condition until the transition is completed. At the same time, the Army intends to gradually expand the adoption of the Black Hawk, considered more modern, reliable and compatible with NATO standards.
Ukraine already operates a limited number of UH-60 helicopters, mainly used by the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR). The aircraft were obtained through different initiatives, including second-hand purchases and donations, but are not yet part of the regular Army Aviation fleet.
Despite the modernization plans, Bardakov stressed that the replacement will take place gradually due to cost, aircraft availability and the need to train pilots and maintenance teams. Until then, Soviet helicopters will continue to play an essential role in Ukraine’s operations against Russian forces.
