Destinus and Rheinmetall have announced progress in the RUTA Block 3 missile program, a new long-range strike system expected to be tested in Ukraine from 2027.

The project foresees a range of up to 2,000 kilometers and is part of the expansion of the RUTA family, already used in combat and currently in serial production in Europe.

While the RUTA Block 1 is already being manufactured on a large scale in the Netherlands, the Block 2 is undergoing flight tests in Ukraine with support from the Ukrainian Brave1 platform. The expectation is that this second version will enter mass production in 2026, serving as the basis for the development of the future Block 3.

According to the companies, the new missile will be equipped with a next-generation turbojet engine and a warhead of around 250 kg. The system will also feature autonomous navigation capable of operating in environments without GNSS signal, as well as advanced detection and terminal guidance systems.

Production of the program will be divided among different European countries. The Netherlands will remain the main engineering and manufacturing center for the RUTA family, while Ukraine will take part in testing and component production.

In Germany, the Rheinmetall Destinus Strike Systems joint venture will be responsible for mass production, certification and final integration of the systems intended for the German Armed Forces and other customers.
