
Ukraine is testing a new way to extend the range of its Hornet attack drones by launching them from an aerostatic balloon, according to a report by Defence Blog.
In this approach, the drone, developed by Perennial Autonomy, does not take off from the ground, but is carried by a helium balloon to a high altitude before being released.
In tests released by Ukraine, the aerostat reportedly reached an altitude of about 8 km, allowing the system to travel more than 40 kilometers before even starting its own propulsion.

As a result, the drone begins its mission already in an advanced position in the airspace, reducing battery consumption during the initial phase of flight and potentially significantly increasing the system’s operational range.
Under normal conditions, the Hornet is estimated to have a range of 150 km, but the use of aerial launch could double that capability by optimizing energy use and trajectory from the start of the operation.

The strategy is part of a broader set of improvised and low-cost solutions adopted by Ukraine during the war against Russia, ranging from interference systems to alternative launch and communication methods.
