The Ukrainian Armed Forces are testing a new 155 mm towed howitzer, named Marta, which stands out for using a shorter 39-caliber barrel.

The information was confirmed by officials from the country’s artillery command, indicating that the project is still in the operational evaluation phase.

According to Colonel Andriy Zhuravlev from the Rocket and Artillery Forces Command, the use of a 39-caliber barrel allows the system to be mounted on a lighter carriage. This makes transportation by smaller vehicles easier, increasing the equipment’s mobility, though it results in a shorter range compared to models with longer barrels.

Currently, the self-propelled Bohdana and the towed Bohdana-BG systems use 52-caliber barrels, but there are plans to equip the Bohdana with a shorter version. The expectation is that the Marta and the lighter Bohdana version will share the same type of barrel, which could reduce logistical, maintenance, and repair costs.
