Ukraine has started operating short-range air defense systems RapidRanger, supplied by the United Kingdom as part of a military aid package announced in 2025.

The equipment has already been integrated into mobile combat units, considered essential for the country’s layered air defense strategy. At least one unit was observed in the field during an official visit by Ukrainian and Lithuanian authorities.

Designed to counter low-altitude threats, the RapidRanger uses laser-guided missiles such as the Starstreak 2 and the Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM), making it effective against drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles. Its compact and lightweight design allows installation on various vehicles, ensuring mobility and rapid response in constantly changing combat scenarios.

The system also stands out for its technological capabilities, including daytime and thermal cameras for low-visibility operations, automatic target tracking, and 360-degree surveillance. In addition, it can operate integrated into command and control networks, enhancing its efficiency within a coordinated air defense structure.

With a detection range of over 15 km and engagement capability beyond 7 km, the RapidRanger strengthens Ukraine’s ability to respond quickly to aerial threats. The delivery is part of a £2.26 billion UK package, which also includes thousands of LMM missiles, consolidating the focus on mobile and adaptable systems for dispersed operations.
