Ukrainian military personnel from the WU Samurai unit shot down a Russian drone of the Gerbera type, equipped with optical detection cameras designed to identify and avoid interceptors.

The equipment was equipped with sensors aimed at different angles, making surprise attacks more difficult. Nonetheless, the Ukrainian operators managed to shoot it down before it could execute defensive maneuvers.

The use of these Russian drones with evasion systems started gaining traction on the battlefield last year, as a response to the increasing use of anti-aircraft aircraft by Ukraine. In another recent report, the same unit also intercepted a Zala drone, which had similar technology to escape attacks.

In parallel, Ukraine is developing its own version of this technology. The manufacturer DEVIRO presented the Snitch module, which uses cameras to detect interceptors and perform automatic maneuvers, although it still has blind spots. A more advanced version is under development, based on electronic intelligence and electronic warfare, with an expected launch by November.

This initiative is part of a European project to create a “drone wall” to counter Russian attacks at the European Union’s border.
