UK jets deployed in the Middle East escorted US Air Force bombers as part of the ongoing Bomber Task Force operations.
During the missions, the Typhoons also conducted integration training with regional and coalition air forces. The Royal Air Force (RAF) jets flew alongside regional allied aircraft, including Iraqi Air Force F-16s for the first time.
The US bombers, currently operating from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, transited European and Middle Eastern airspace, integrating with coalition forces before conducting exercises in firing ranges across the region.
The RAF Typhoons worked with two USAF KC-135 tankers to maintain operational tempo during the flights, the Royal Air Force stated in a release.
“The BTF missions are important for the RAF as they provide regular opportunities to work with one of our closest allies,” said Chris Pearson, wing commander leading the RAF Typhoon detachment in the Middle East.
“The sorties maintain our experience flying with the USAF BTF day and night. They demonstrate the RAF’s ability to conduct such missions and project air power in a coalition at range when needed.”
The Bomber Task Force (BTF) is a key initiative of the US Air Force’s Global Strike Command designed to project US airpower globally.
Regular deployments of strategic bombers such as the B-52H Stratofortress demonstrate the US military’s capability to quickly deploy advanced combat capabilities in response to evolving threats.
