Uber has announced a $4,000 incentive for drivers who replace their combustion cars with electric vehicles.
The initiative is part of the “Uber Green” service, which has recently been renamed to “Uber Electric“. Along with the change, the company announced the “Go Electric” program — a $4,000 subsidy to encourage drivers to replace their current cars with electric ones.
The benefit will initially be available only to drivers in certain U.S. states, including New York, California, Colorado, and Massachusetts.
In other states, Uber drivers will also receive an additional $1,000 for any electric vehicle purchased through the TrueCar marketplace.
According to the website MashDigi, this move is being seen as a response to the end of the U.S. federal electric vehicle tax credit policy.
The $7,500 federal tax credit for purchasing electric vehicles, which was created during Joe Biden’s administration, expired last month, making EV models more expensive and less attractive to buyers.
In addition to the vehicle exchange bonus, Uber also offers other incentives for electric car drivers who use the platform for their rides.
In Colorado, drivers can earn $200 for every 100 trips completed with an electric vehicle, up to a cumulative maximum of $4,000.
Another component of the initiative is the “zero-emission incentive,” which offers drivers bonuses ranging from $100 to $250, depending on the city, for completing trips with an electric vehicle.
And to support these financial programs, Uber has also expanded its partnerships to improve drivers’ access to fast-charging infrastructure across the country.
“Today, there are more than 200,000 electric vehicle drivers on our platform worldwide, completing millions of zero-emission trips. We want to keep up this momentum, which is why we’re announcing electrification updates for both riders and drivers,” said Uber.
