Uber and Baidu have announced a strategic partnership to bring Apollo Go robotaxis to countries outside the United States and mainland China.
The initiative is set to begin later this year, with an initial focus on regions in Asia and the Middle East. The collaboration combines Uber’s global platform with Baidu’s autonomous fleet, which already exceeds one thousand vehicles.
The agreement marks another move by Uber toward the autonomous transport market, a sector that requires both technological and regulatory solutions to scale. The company already has partnerships with other players in the space, including Waymo, Pony AI, and May Mobility. Baidu, in turn, operates Apollo Go in 15 cities and has completed more than 11 million rides with its autonomous vehicles.
Initially, Uber users in these regions will not be able to directly request a robotaxi, but may be matched with an Apollo Go autonomous vehicle depending on availability, a model already used in other company collaborations.
The expansion of the technology outside of China represents, according to Baidu CEO Robin Li, an important milestone in the internationalization of autonomous driving.
