The United States Secret Service is seeking new all-terrain vehicles that combine off-road mobility with discretion, aiming to replace or complement the traditional armored Suburbans used in presidential motorcades.
The agency is keeping project details confidential but is negotiating with GM Defense to develop platforms that integrate better with the environment and offer more flexibility in different regions around the world.
Currently, the Secret Service fleet includes presidential limousines and armored pursuit SUVs, built on civilian models adapted with armor. Before GM Defense’s investments in dedicated vehicles, it was common to modify cars purchased from dealerships, a process that resulted in heavy, slow vehicles, nicknamed “Monster Garage” by company executives.
The new program may involve vehicles based on the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) or the Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) from GM, but the creation of a completely new platform is also not ruled out.
The initiative aims to provide more versatile and discreet solutions for presidential and diplomatic operations, especially in locations where traditional armored vehicles stand out too much and are easily noticed.
