The United States Navy has taken an important step toward modernizing undersea warfare by selecting the autonomous submarine Dive-XL, developed by Anduril, to be part of the Combat Autonomous Maritime Platform (CAMP) program.
The initiative aims to create a new generation of submerged “motherships” capable of operating without a crew and independently launching swarms of drones and torpedoes, significantly expanding the reach and efficiency of naval operations.
The proposal follows a global trend: the use of unmanned systems as force multipliers. Inspired by advances in aerial drones, navies are increasingly investing in hybrid fleets that combine crewed and autonomous vessels. This model allows for monitoring larger areas and reallocating conventional ships to strategic missions, while drones take on roles such as surveillance, attack, and large-scale data collection.
Despite its potential, the main challenge lies in scale and speed of implementation. Rapidly producing a large number of underwater vehicles is essential to ensure operational advantage. The CAMP project is designed precisely to accelerate this process, focusing on the agile development of autonomous submarines capable of filling logistical gaps and expanding attack and reconnaissance capabilities at sea.
Dive-XL stands out for its innovative and adaptable design, which facilitates mass production and reduces costs by eliminating the traditional pressurized hull. With a modular structure, the submarine can be configured for different missions, such as surveillance, mine countermeasures, and anti-submarine warfare. In addition, its main advantage is the ability to launch smaller drones, creating networks of sensors and attack systems on the seabed. Broader operational tests are expected in the coming months, when the technology will be evaluated under real-world conditions.
