Reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) recently disclosed by the United States may, in fact, have been Russian aircraft carrying out attacks against Georgia in 2001.
According to a report by the portal Militarnyi, some of the records classified as “UFOs” or “unidentified aerial phenomena” by U.S. authorities may have been related to flights by Russian fighter jets near Georgian territory before and during the war between Russia and Georgia in October 2001.
At the time, several Russian air incursions took place over separatist regions such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia. However, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Georgy Mamedov, strongly denied any involvement by Russian aviation.
The lack of clear information and the secrecy surrounding Russian military operations contributed to several reports initially being treated as unidentified aerial phenomena by Western observers and monitoring systems.
In an analysis of the case, U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow accused Russia of deliberately trying to “deceive” the United States. “It is difficult to accept official Russian denials that Russian aircraft were not involved. To suggest that they could have been UFOs would be funny if not for the seriousness of the violations,” he said in the document.
“Most likely, Russia was trying to keep pressure on the Georgians and Chechens in the gorge in a not-so-subtle effort to prevent the movement of those groups toward Abkhazia or Russia. The official denials reflect a traditional Russian inclination to avoid an awkward admission with a bold lie.”
