U.S. Denies Sale of Helicopters and Aircraft to Taiwan Amid Tensions with China (X @LockheedMartin)
The United States rejected Taiwan’s request for the purchase of MH-60R SEAHAWK helicopters and E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft.
During a visit to the U.S., Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Defense presented a list of desired equipment, but part of the requests were denied on the grounds that they did not align with the U.S. strategy of strengthening asymmetric forces on the island.
Currently, Taiwan operates E-2K aircraft, in use since 1995, which, despite an upgrade in 2013, face serious technical issues and a shortage of replacement parts. Plans to replace these aircraft were considered between 2018 and 2020 but were delayed due to financial constraints. With the U.S. denial, the expectation of renewing the fleet by 2032 is no longer feasible.
Additionally, Taiwan’s S-70C(M) anti-submarine helicopters also require modernization in response to the growing Chinese threat. Meanwhile, the country plans to reinforce its air defense by creating a fourth battalion equipped with new Patriot PAC-3 systems, which are expected to be delivered in 2025-2026.
