Two U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortresses conducted the first weapon release in Sweden since the country joined NATO in March 2024.
The aircraft, participating in the VIKING NEBULA mission of the Bomber Task Force (BTF), were escorted by two Swedish JAS 39 Gripens to the Vidsel Test Range, where they released GBU-38 direct attack munitions.
According to U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, the mission was designed to refine precision strike capabilities in coordination with Joint Terminal Attack Controllers from Sweden and the U.S. on the ground.
The mission, marking the increased interoperability between NATO and Sweden as the country grows within the alliance, also included a low formation flyover of the Swedish Parliament to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Sweden’s NATO membership.
