Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the British Royal Air Force were scrambled to intercept Russian drones detected near the border between Romania and Ukraine.

According to The Aviationist, the Russian drones were part of a swarm of 15 unmanned aerial vehicles of the OWA (one-way attack) type. The interception took place on Saturday morning (25).

After being tasked to engage the targets, the RAF jets successfully shot down the aircraft. The downed Russian drones crashed in the city of Galați, Romania. Although they destroyed a utility pole and part of a house, no fatalities were reported.

“The Ministry of National Defence strongly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation and emphasizes that they represent a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area,” said a statement released by Romania’s Ministry of Defence.

“Such incidents demonstrate the Russian Federation’s disregard for international law and put at risk not only the safety of Romanian citizens, but also NATO’s collective security.”

“Romania remains firmly committed to fulfilling its obligations as a member state of the Alliance and will continue to work closely with its partners and allies to monitor and defend its national airspace,” the statement added.

RAF aircraft are currently stationed at the 86th Air Base in Fetești to support NATO’s air policing mission, created to protect the Alliance’s eastern flank. Deployed to the location in March, the aircraft and troops are expected to remain in the region for four months.
