China has officially unveiled the capabilities of the Type 99B, the most advanced version of its main battle tank, developed to operate in high-altitude and extreme cold environments.

According to state media, the armored vehicle is designed to conduct fast and sustained operations in regions such as the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas, indicating a possible deployment to the border with India, an area marked by historical disputes and recent tension.

The Type 99B features significant advances in command, communication, and battlefield situational awareness, integrating 360-degree optical and infrared sensors, a remote weapon station, and electronic systems capable of operating in harsh conditions.

During tests broadcast by CCTV, the tank demonstrated live firing on targets at 1 km, as well as remote operations and real-time data transmission, reinforcing its role as an information hub within the People’s Liberation Army’s intelligent ground combat system.

Weighing around 55 tons and armed with a 125 mm cannon, the Type 99B complements the lighter Type 15 tanks, already deployed in mountainous areas since 2020. While the Type 15 prioritizes mobility, the new model offers greater firepower to counter Indian armored vehicles such as the T-72 and T-90, expanding China’s military options in a potential direct confrontation scenario in the Himalaya region.
