A Turkish ship was hit by a Russian drone during the night of May 29, shortly after leaving a port in Ukraine’s Odesa region.
The attack caused damage to the vessel and left crew members injured, according to information released by the Ukrainian Navy.
Ukrainian military authorities identified the vessel as the cargo ship ANT, registered under the flag of Vanuatu and owned by a company from Turkey. The ship was heading to a Turkish port carrying cargo when it was hit in the superstructure, the area that houses command systems and crew facilities.
After the impact, Ukrainian Navy teams launched a rescue operation. Two injured sailors were removed from the ship by military vessels and taken for medical treatment. The fire caused by the explosion was brought under control shortly afterward with support from the Maritime Search and Rescue Service.
The incident adds to other recent attacks on civilian vessels sailing toward the ports of Odesa. In May, a bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was struck by drones while preparing to load grain. In April, another commercial vessel, this time registered in Liberia, was also targeted in a similar attack during its approach to the Ukrainian coast.
