Fatih KACIR, Turkey’s Minister of Technology and Industry, announced the completion of a new live firing test of the SOM-J anti-ship cruise missile.
According to information from the website Naval News, Minister KACIR shared a live test video of the missile on his social media. The clip shows the launch, mid-course guidance, terminal phase, and target acquisition moments.
The test firing was conducted against a stationary maritime target, and the missile successfully hit the target. “The SOM-J cruise missile we developed at TÜBİTAK SAGE shows how far our advanced engineering has evolved,” KACIR said on his X profile.
“In a live firing test demonstrating demanding maneuvers to evade defense and radar systems and flights at very low altitudes close to the surface, the SOM-J proved its worth.”
The SOM-J, developed by the Turkish military technology company TÜBİTAK SAGE, is an air-to-surface missile designed for use against heavily defended land and naval targets. It is mounted inside the aircraft or under the wing.
Due to its modular design, the missile provides great operational flexibility. The SOM-J, already in service with the Turkish Air Force, is a cost-effective solution due to its low detectability and long range, among other enhanced capabilities.
