Turkey has taken a significant step in its defense industry by starting serial production of the nationally developed Altay main battle tank.
The first delivery took place in Kahramankazan during a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which also marked the inauguration of BMC’s Next-Generation Tank and Armored Vehicle Production Factory. The initial phase uses imported components, but the project will transition to the indigenous BATU engine for upcoming deliveries.
The Altay “Yeni Altay” combines passive, reactive, and active protection, including modern armor, a 360° active protection system, and turret upgrades, allowing greater crew survivability and combat resilience. The tank also integrates a high-precision gun, advanced fire-control systems, and nationalized electronics, placing it among the world’s leading MBTs (Main Battle Tanks) in terms of firepower, protection, and mobility. The T1 variant already offers layered protection, while the T2, currently in production, will bring further advancements in electronics and command systems.
The Altay program, initiated over a decade ago based on South Korea’s K2 Black Panther tank technology, aimed to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and develop local industrial capabilities. Turkey’s experience in operations in Syria, Iraq, and other regional conflicts influenced the design, resulting in a tank tailored to national operational requirements. With Altay entering serial production, the country moves toward self-sufficiency in land combat systems and strengthens its strategic defense capability.
