The administration of Donald Trump has authorized the sale of 3,350 ERAM cruise missiles to Ukraine as part of an $850 million aid package, mostly funded by European countries.
The missiles are expected to arrive in the country within approximately six weeks, but their use will require prior approval from the Pentagon. The package was approved after Trump’s summits with Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The ERAM are low-cost cruise missiles developed to enhance the Ukrainian Air Force’s ability to hit targets at long distances, with an estimated range of 400 km and a maximum speed of 0.6 Mach. The design prioritizes simplicity, allowing for the rapid production of up to 1,000 units in two years. To achieve this performance, the missile is equipped with a turbofan engine and is derived from a 227-kilogram bomb.
While waiting for the ERAM, Ukraine is already successfully using Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, air-launched for long-range strikes. To ensure a continuous supply of these weapons, manufacturer MBDA has resumed production at its British facility in Stevenage, ensuring that the country can strengthen its strategic arsenal without interruption.
