In keeping with campaign promises by Donald Trump, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a series of reversals regarding carbon emission regulation in the country.

The EPA published 26 announcements detailing proposals to change standards measuring air quality, groundwater pollution, and carbon emissions. The agency is following through with what President Trump promised during his campaign.

The regulation was finalized in March 2024 under the Biden administration and included significant reductions in carbon emissions starting in 2027. The rules would have covered light vehicles and medium-duty commercial vehicles until 2032.

The plan encouraged the development of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging infrastructure, aiming to increase EV sales by 50%.

Proponents of the regulation argued it would drive the development of technologies essential to the country.

Lee Zeldin, appointed by Trump to head the Environmental Protection Agency, officially expressed his opposition to the rule.

“The American automotive industry was harmed by the overwhelming regulatory regime of the previous administration,” Zeldin said in a statement.

“By reconsidering nearly one trillion dollars in regulatory costs, we will respect the rule of law to protect consumer choice and the environment,” the statement continued, without detailing the new plan.

The announcement comes at the same time that Donald Trump defended Tesla, the electric vehicle maker of Elon Musk.

The changes still need to go through several stages before being approved.
