Toyota has revealed a concept version of the GR Yaris that takes performance to a new level with a mid-mounted engine.

Unlike the standard model, which has a 1.6 turbo three-cylinder engine, the GR Yaris M Concept is equipped with the “G20E” four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine, still under development. The automaker describes this new engine as part of an innovative engine lineup, but details about the drivetrain have not been disclosed yet.

Although the mid-engine layout is unlikely to be used in a commercial Yaris, it could signal the return of a dedicated sports car, like the MR2 or even a revival of the Celica.

The new engine could also be integrated into other vehicles in the Gazoo Racing lineup, furthering Toyota’s commitment to performance, while promising to continue Supra production in future generations.

Before that, the GR Yaris M will undergo rigorous testing in the Super Taikyu Series, where it will be pushed to its limits in extreme racing conditions to evaluate its durability and performance. This approach will allow Toyota to refine its technology and explore the potential of its new engines under challenging conditions.
