The world’s largest aircraft, known as the “flying bum,” now has a scheduled takeoff date, with tourist flights to Spain and the Arctic already planned.

The Airlander 10, a hybrid between an airplane and an airship, measures 92 meters in length and uses helium to float through the skies at a speed of up to 130 km/h.

The project, which has already cost $174.2 million, suffered an accident during its second flight but is now in the production phase and could begin operations by 2029, with plans to manufacture 24 units per year at a factory in Doncaster.

The aircraft will be equipped with luxurious features such as private cabins, fine dining, and panoramic views, offering passengers a unique travel experience.

The company Hybrid Air Vehicles, responsible for the project, envisions that the Airlander could transform aviation, particularly in reducing carbon emissions, aiming to cut up to 90% of emissions typical of commercial flights. The company also hopes that this new mode of transportation will become an efficient alternative to traditional aviation, which is under increasing pressure to lower its environmental impact.

Despite advancements, the company still requires significant investment to continue its development, estimating a need for an additional $373.3 million in the coming years. More than $2.4 billion in orders have already been placed, including by Air Nostrum, one of Europe’s largest airlines.

The Airlander, which can land on various types of surfaces, provides an innovative solution for air transport without relying on traditional airport infrastructure.
